ABOUT THE CHOCTAW

You might want to know just a little bit about the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians that we will be ministering to.

There are two Choctaw tribes, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. The Oklahoma nation are the Choctaws who followed the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. The MBCI (Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians) are the Choctaw who stayed behind and hid in the hills so as not to be removed from their land. At the present, the Choctaw lands cover over 35,000 acres in ten different counties in Mississippi. And it is not one big tribal plot of land. There are different sections of land that are not adjacent. There are 8 separate reservation communities with Pearl River being the main tribal community. Our team ministers in two communities: the Choctaw United Methodist Mission (where we stay) which is adjacent to the Pearl River Community, and the Bogue Chitto Community (where we have VBS) is 25 miles northeast of the mission.
